EU protect Greece’s borders with Turkey and ends Turkey’s claims on the the Greek owned Aegean Islands, problem solved. Greece saves Billions. However the English and Italians back Turkey 100% in all disputes and will never agree to the EU helping Greece protect its own borders against the Turks. That is the problem.
@emakopoulos amigo, make that Mediterranean wise, not just the Balkans and Turks…. let Spain get into the Greek heritage, at least Catalonia, we are Greek/Roman heritage, as much as the Balkans: is either that, or we are Arabs and part of Islam, I like it better being Greek ;-D
@Arabastai I’m Spanish (kind of the same economical situation, and not being ready to be part of the Euro before we joined), but for me, Europe without Greece is no sense, if we do have a shared cultural background that might unite us as a more global national concept, that is Romans and Greeks.
I don’t want to be part of a German alliance, for that, I would have joined Hitler, I have Greeks in EU, or I do not want to be part of it.
So my argument in respect to Greece’s military spending reflects on how the European nations choose to protect and recognise this nations concerns…when a non EU nation threatens the security within the region and places demands by the use of military threats…how does the EU stand on the side lines and place judgment and ignore the reasons but instead make demands on resolutions and request cut backs when also Turkey is moving towards nuclear possession.
Greece spends to keep balance secure
When the Convention of the Law of the Sea came into force Turkey declared that any eventual extension of Greek territorial waters would be considered as a casus belli. Greece ratified the above Convention on 31st May 1995, and on 8th June 1995 the Turkish National Assembly issued a resolution granting the Turkish government full competence, military included, to maintain and protect Turkeys vital interests. This resolution is still in force, and Turkey has not revoked this policy.

This right to extend territorial waters to up to 12 nautical miles , and has already been exercised by many states including Turkey, which since 1964 has extended her territorial waters in the Black Sea and the Mediterranean to 12 nautical miles.
He presents valid points…. salvaging any failing economy requires sacrifice and aggressive alternative measures. The unified Europe can succeed and prosper but every nations interests must be addressed and monitored. We can not make demands upon Greece in its military spending when the true reasons are being overlooked, Turkey violets Greek airspace daily , sending fighter jets over Greek Islands and territorial waters……
I am Greek and all I have to say is that Greece was not ready for the euro nor the European union, it was a big mistake to offer membership to Greece.
